Stefania Carlotti

Stefania Carlotti

Born in Carpi, Italy, 1994.
Lives and works in Lausanne

Stefania Carlotti is an artist working across a range of different media including sculpture, video, animation, and writing. In her work, the artist uses a low-tech, DIY aesthetic - in contrast to the sophistication of contemporary industrial production and design - in which common memories and images are condensed into positions of social criticism. She combines cinematographic stereotypes with places, ordinary objects, and collective fantasies to explore and interrogate parameters of psychological power.

Carlotti often appropriates these elements through their reproduction as an attempt to rationalize her place in the world and make sense of her existence. The importance of narrative and the imperceptibility of the boundary between fiction and reality are key features of her work, as is the presence of moments frozen in time and apocalyptic atmospheres. Often the artist represents the suspended moment that preludes to a catastrophe or the one immediately after it, experimenting with time, which she refers to as a loop from which it is impossible to escape.

Recent shows include VITA-MINE, Sonnenstube, Lugano; Before the fire, FORDE, Geneva; Primary Domain, Ordet, Milano. In 2022 Carlotti will take part in Date with destiny, Foyer, Milan.

The artist has benefited from residencies at CASTRO, Roma in 2019 and 2020.

Stefania Carlotti obtained a Bachelor of Arts from the Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti (NABA), Milan in 2016 and a Master’s degree in Visual Arts from the Ecole Cantonale d’art Lausanne in 2019.
