Caroline Schattling Villeval

Caroline Schattling Villeval

Born in Zurich, 1995.
Lives and works in Geneva

Caroline Schattling Villeval is a multimedia artist. In recent work, she has been interested in the question of motherhood in contemporary art, interweaving personal experience and codes of mainstream culture in an attempt to universalise everyday mythologies. The artist explores these ideas through a plurality of media, including installation, sound, sculpture, painting, written and performative work.

For the Schattling Villeval, becoming a parent raised visceral questions about feminism and motherhood that, in the artist’s words, felt like “an old book that everyone has read, but that no one wants to hear about anymore”. Confronting her own reservations and that of the artworld became a liberating experience.

Recent shows include No firing with Paul Paillet, 3353, Carouge (2022), Canale Milva: Allamattina appena alzata #3, curated by Giada Olivotto and Camilla Paolino, online (2021), and Plaisirs minuits, Le Fesses-tival at Forde, Geneva. Up-coming exhibitions include the Kiefer Hablitzel Göhner Art Prize, Basel, and Bourses Déliées Fond cantonal d’art contemporain Grant, Geneva.

Caroline Schattling Villeval obtained her Master’s degree in Visual Art from Haute Ecole des Arts et Design of Geneva in 2021 and a Bachelor's degree from the same institution in 2018.
